Tanning Tips
Whether you’re heading into the salon for a professional spray tan, or applying your self tan glow at home, get perfect results every time by following these tips…
48 hours prior
HAIR REMOVAL
Wax or shave at least 48 hours prior to your tan to allow sufficient time for pores to close. Hair removal opens the pores and open pores may enable over absorption of tan resulting in dark dots around pores.
24 hours prior
EXFOLIATE
The importance of this step cannot be underestimated! Your tan will last as long as your skin cells do, so revealing a new layer 24 hours prior to your tan is essential. Freshly exfoliated skin provides a perfect base to apply the tan so you can be sure to have an even result. Pay particular attention to problem areas like elbows, knees, and ankles. Moisturize after exfoliation.
AVOID BARRIERS
After exfoliating and moisturizing, avoid any other shower products, oil based products, or lotions. These act as barriers against your skin and may prevent the tanning agent from developing.
Your appointment
FINISHING TOUCHES
Make sure your skin is clean and dry. Don’t apply deodorant, perfume, moisturizer or make-up before your appointment as this may result in a patchy tan, discolouration, or a tan that doesn’t last long. We always have baby wipes available in case you need to remove products, but be aware that they will leave your skin damp which could affect your tan.
WHAT TO BRING
You will be provided with a disposable g-string and hair net for your appointment. If you’d like to wear a strapless bra, bikini, or elaborately designed undergarments (for the tan lines!) you’re welcome to bring them along. Be aware that the spray tan contains a bronzing element, and although it is water soluble, we recommend dark undergarments or a dedicated tanning set
Bring a sun dress, robe, or dark loose clothing to wear after your appointment. The less straps and elastic the better as constant rubbing right after application can affect your tan before it’s had a chance to absorb.
Wear jandals (or go bare foot!) home.
If it’s raining bring an umbrella! AVOID WATER AT ALL COSTS.
1-3 hours post tan
WAIT
Your technician will advise when you need to have your first rinse-off shower. This depends on your skin tone, the shade you’d like to go and can be anywhere from 1-3 hours post tan (most commonly around the 2 hour mark). Do NOT leave on for more than the recommended time as you may end up orange.
AVOID WATER
Water spots will result in a spotty tan! Stay AWAY from rain, and avoid sweating as much as possible until your rinse-off shower. If you need to wash your hands, resist the temptation to flick hands dry - water often ends up all over you resulting in not-so-perfectly tanned thighs.
Beyond
RINSE-OFF SHOWER
Shower quickly in lukewarm water for 45 seconds and gently “wipe off” the bronzer with your hands (no soaps, shampoos, scrubs etc). Do not use hot water as this will stop the development of your tan - a common mistake people make especially in the colder months!
Pat your skin dry rather than rubbing it dry.
MOISTURIZE
Moisturize immediately after your rinse-off shower, then twice daily after. Keeping your skin hydrated makes for a long-lasting tan
AFTER DAY 5
Exfoliate with a soft body polish to allow your skin to absorb even more moisturizer. This keeps the tan looking natural and helps it to fade naturally rather than in patches.
Removal
EXFOLIATE
Your tan should naturally fade, however if you’d like to speed up this process, use an exfoliating mitt in the shower to scrub off the last of your tan. This step conveniently cycles back to the prep stage for another application!
